Annual RRVD NMRA Show

The Rock River Valley Division of the NMRA hosted another wonderful train show the last weekend of March.

This Chapter thanks the RRVD for extending us an invite to participate.

John Fredrickson lead our team of Bob Hillman, Andrew Townsend and myself.

John set-up a black draped chair with Henry Auchstetter's name badge as a fitting tribute to the late Henry, who passed away last December. This was the first time I can recall that Henry was not present to assist our Chapter.

While I was strolling through the spacious, well lit gymnasium, I came upon the displays of three railroad historical societies: Soo Line, C&NW and the Milwaukee Road.

First out was the Soo Line. They had their 2017 calendars on sale for five bucks each. I got one for me and the other calendar for Chapter raffles.

Then I came upon the Chicago & North Western. Looking for calendars, I spotted a very interesting magazine cover. It had one of my shots on the cover of the "North Western Lines", that organization's quarterly magazine!

The C&NWHS is hosting their annual convention in Rockford the weekend of May 20th Our Mike Schafer asked me for some C&NW slides from the 70s and 80s. He authored a two part story about the C&NW in Rockford, their host city.

Mike chose my shot of what I called the "Mini-400" rolling north up Madison Street, street trackage in May of 1988. The train was complete with back to back EMD F-units and four passenger (business) cars. The occasion was in celebration of the rebuilding of the line from Belvidere to Rockford, along with the help of State of Illinois money.

Part One in the 2017 Number One issue, features a detailed account of railroad entries into the "Forest City". Many, many interesting black & white photographs filled out the pages, which also included an over-all railroad map of Rockford.

I will highly recommend you pick up a copy real soon. This could well be a sell out. "The Milwaukee Railroader" magazine Rockford two-part issues had sold out from a few years ago. Part Two in the 2017 Number Two issue will complete the historical account of the C&NW/UP in Rockford.

We May or we May not
The C&NWHS convention in Rockford for the weekend of May 20th enters into our discussion about when or if we should have a May Chapter meeting.

As you may recall, the fourth Saturday of May falls on Memorial Day weekend. This has lead attendance to vary from a good size crowd to six attendees at one of the meetings. Six people hardly justifies the $100 hall rental and is rather insulting to the presenter that night.

Add to this, Ron Lundstrom and myself, who primarily open and close the church, have become more family oriented that weekend.

We have bounced around this dilemma of what to do with this meeting month for years. We've gone from dumping the meeting to moving it to leaving it where it was to begin with.

We will address this question once again at the April Board of Director's meeting and give you our take. You will have the final vote.

A Guessing Game-Last Report
The Union Pacific local to Rockford from Belvidere came up the KD on Monday and Wednesday the week of 3-27. The week of 4-3 was the traditional Wednesday during the Noon hour. The week of 4-10, they came up Tuesday during the Noon hour.

You are now on your own.
